Defend the Dream Foundation Awarded Social Justice Grant by NFL Foundation

On Tuesday, Derrick Johnson’s Defend the Dream Foundation was awarded a $5,000 grant from the NFL Foundation as part of the NFL’s initiative to help players get more involved in social causes within their community. The grant funding will support the Defend the Dream Foundation’s educational programs for inner-city youth in Johnson’s home state of Texas.

During his thirteen-year run with the Chiefs, Johnson had been extremely active in the Kansas City community. Focused around providing educational opportunities and literacy support, Johnson’s Defend the Dream Foundation has unveiled sixteen reading rooms – or Discovery Dens – in Title I schools in the last several years. These Discovery Dens have distributed thousands of books to more than 20,000 students, which has helped to improve their literacy capabilities and their scores on standardized tests.

The NFL Foundation’s Social Justice Grant program provides grant funding to nonprofit organizations whose missions are focused around social justice causes and have been financially supported by an NFL player. According to the NFL Foundation’s website, the grants are designed to reduce barriers to opportunity through a focus on education, criminal justice reform, poverty, racial equality, and many other causes.

Poor literacy is one of the largest barriers preventing economically-challenged students from excelling and achieving their dreams. Johnson’s outreach addresses this need through the installation of new Discovery Dens and the provision of age-appropriate books. This Social Justice grant will allow Derrick Johnson’s Defend the Dream Foundation to continue to grow its outreach programming in its new market in Texas.
